Other bands:
The Victim’s Shudder
Yellow6
Hold Your Breath (from Brazil)
Sleepmakeswaves (for sure asked)
Desolation (Ethereal Beauty side project)
Ethereal Beauty told me no for the songs, was very much against it. But I wanted his band badly on there. Less than a month after Diluvian Temperals got released, both of the songs he had recorded appeared on Various ‎– The World Comes To An End In The End Of A Journey Various Artists compilation by Pest Productions in China. I was really sad about that but for some reason I didn’t see it quite yet that Jordan was a fucking asshole. He ended up screwing me over many more times over the next year.
VE: I didn’t want to include Vision Eternel because I felt it would be boasting, too obvious and at the time I didn’t think my music had the same calibre as the other bands on there.
Bleeding Heart Narrative (likely I asked them too)

“Diluvian Temperals” was the first release on Abridged Pause Recordings. Back in October of 2007 I decided to form a new record label, “Mortified Productions”, to release other people’s music on CDs. My other record label at the time, Mortification Records, was mostly used to release demos of my own projects. The idea remained but in February of 2008 I came up with the name “Abridged Pause Recordings”. This was going to be a physical record label releasing anything from indie rock to post-metal, anything but black metal, which had been Mortification Records’ focus.

I wanted the first release on the new record label to be a various artists compilation, because I thought it would make a good impact and get the label’s name out there. The first artist that I contacted was Matt Dell, an indie rock artist from Ontario. I also wanted indie bands like The Douglas Fir, possibly even asked them. Also asked Dukes of the Archipelago. My friend Eiman’s band, Eliminator, was also going to possibly contribute something, since I had been offered to release his first album, “Breaking the Wheel”. I was likely going to contribute a Vision Éternel song as well, but more than likely would have released something from Vision Solitude since I later attempted to write and record an indie rock album titled “Nebraska Motion”.

Slow Learner was another Indie Rock band that influenced me in 2007.
May have asked him on Myspace to be on the compilation, but can’t be sure.

I’m not sure if I already had the name “Abridged Pause Recordings” when I started the idea of the compilation, or if was initially set to be released through Mortified Productions. I know that I sent many messages to bands that I liked on Myspace asking for their participation. Most of them ignored me. The few that responded offered to send me songs from previous albums, which I was never really happy about. I wanted the compilation to stand out and I knew that I needed exclusive material.

By February 2008, I was set on using the name “Abridged Pause Recordings”. My friend Jeremy Roux bought the domain name (http://www.abridgedpause.com) and let me use the space on his rented server for free. He started designing the Abridged Pause Recordings website that summer and asked me to get him some bands that I wanted to work with to add content. So I set out to “sign” (or rather offer to release) the first bands on my new record label. I was looking pretty much exclusively on Myspace, since that was the place to find bands at the time. The first band that I “signed” to Abridged Pause Recordings was Dreams of the Drowned, an avant-garde post-black band fro France. Next came Black Autumn, an atmospheric black metal band from Germany.

At the time that these bands were added to the roster in the late summer/early autumn, Dreams of the Drowned’s first album, “Longue Vie / Imminent Doom”, was set to be the first release on Abridged Pause Recordings. The second release was going to be the Vision Éternel/Ethereal Beauty split 7″ and the third was Black Autumn’s upcoming album, which was eventually released as “Aurora”. But neither of those three releases were ready so I started working on the compilation idea again, to release something in the meanwhile.

In the winter of 2008/2009 I started looking for bands to do the compilation again. The plan was to release a free download compilation to get the label’s name out there and gather recognition, while I applied for grants through government-funded agencies, to help me release vinyls of the future releases.

During this time, Jeremy had finished a beta version of the Abridged Pause Recordings website which went live and promoted the first four bands. But he never finished the website, which ended up delaying the release in the future.

I thought about putting together a compilation for a couple months but I didn’t like the idea much. I had tried it before, with Matt Dell and co and it just didn’t work out for me. People didn’t care. But finally I realized that it could be good if everything would be exclusive to this compilation.

That winter I contacted a ton of bands. Paradigms Recordings was a hot label and I reached out to many of their bands; Kailash, Somnam, Tropes, Ondo, The Victim’s Shudder and Left Sensory Bypass.

Onryō from UK maybe? Or was this the shitty Alcest rippoff band that everyone liked but me.

Ondo – “Grief Cycle”

AV – “Quiet Woods, Deep In Slumber”

Left Sensory Bypass – “Mountains”

I Am Above on the Left – “Never Drive A Car When You’re Dead”

also asked Liquid Limbs from Florida, they were working with Sound Study Recordings, Tom Rankine and Joe Simmons’ new label
possibly also asked City of Ships, depending when they worked with that label.

Lost Children Netlabel was another one. Pet Slimmers of the Year (was their most recent release), Loss of a Child (I was a big fan of their album “Carry Me Home” [though this apparently came out in December 2009?]), Sleepmakeswaves (not sure if they responded). Sleepmakeswaves’ EP came out on January 3rd and Pet Slimmers of the Year’s EP came out on January 15th. So I probably discovered both bands at the same time.

also asked A Forest Of Stars, but they refused.

also asked Rain Tongue, because I was quite obsessed with their song “Terra” but they also turned down the offer, or possibly said I could use a song from their already released album

So I put together a roster of bands, which was completed in February of 2009.

sometime in march/april went to Charli Lemieux’s place on the Plateau  who was supposed to master the whole thing, and he told me some of the tracks were not top notch material.

Bands like:

The Conspirators of the Occult – “Anatomy of a Magus”

Yellow6

I Am Above on the Left – “Never Drive a Car When You’re Dead”

Left Sensory Bypass – “Mountains”

Children Egoism – “Mon(((o)))ton”

The Victim’s Shudder (sent me three songs to choose from)

Hotel 76

Atlantis

Njiqahdda – “‘N Ventrii”

Ancestral – “Delusions of Grandeur”, “Fall”

and all sent me songs that were dropped. Ancestral agreed but later didn’t end up on it. Were also talking of releasing upcoming album on APR. Sent me song “Delusions Of Grandeur” to hear, which was not very impressive. I wasn’t excited about that song at the time. I remember chasing the band, who originally assured me that they were on track with a song for the compilation and were hard at work on it. When checking back with them one day, I found out the main band member had decided to break up the band. Later on heard “Fall” which was labeled as being for the compilation Der Wanderer (compiled by Niels Geybels). unsure if this was what going to be for APR or not.

Dark Forest wanted to contribute something but wound up not sending anything in. cant remember why
Cormorant can’t reemmber why
Orgone turned it down
Fen asked, but can’t rember what happened. possibly offered song from previous release
Dargaard offered song from previous release
Utlagr most likely asked them, they likely ignored me
Woburn House, likely asked them, can’t recall if they responded
Ondo, pretty sure I asked them as well (Paradigms Recordings)
Tropes, most likely asked as well

Ethereal Beauty didn’t want to submit either of the two songs that were recorded, “There’s A Grey Cloud Above Us” or “The Sun Shines Tomorrow” because he insisted that they were demos and weren’t going to be released. I found out later that he ended up allowing another record label use both songs on another various artists compilation.

Dreams of the drowned; camille didn’t want to contribute  anything because he was saving everything for the full-length. he suggested his other band Smohalla but I told him that I didn’t like that band. It was true at first listen, it was too chaotic. But I ended up asking anyway and the new song that Vincent sent me was really amazing.

Apart from that, neither Vision Éternel, Ethereal Beauty or Dreams of the Drowned had any songs to submit. So that left me to start over with only the songs from Black Autumn, Black Sand and Starless Nights and Somnam. All ten other songs were bands I discovered within the next three months.

Black Sand and Starless Nights considered “Good Question”, “Heaven’s Fire” and “5/8th’s Perfection”.

Kailash originally lied to me, telling me the song would be exclusive. it was actually a pre-requisite that all songs had to be exclusive for this compilation. It was about a month before the compilation was scheduled to come out, that I found out, while talking with vincent cassar of Smohalla, and saying “all these songs are exclusive” and he said the Kailash song was from their upcoming album, and that they even named the new album after that song. I was really pissed and I confronted them about it, but because it was such a good song, I made an exception. The compilation was due to be released a few months before the album, so it would be exclusive for a little while, and also they asked me if I was interested in releasing the vinyl version of the album, so it kind of kept it in the family and served as a preview of an album was going to release.

As of April 9th of 2009, judging by the artist images I sent Jeremy for the website, the roster for the compilation included Ancestral, Black Autumn, Black Sand and Starless Nights, Feos, I Am Above on the Left, Kailash, Left Sensory Bypass, Njiqahdda, Parabstruse, Pet Slimmers of the Year, Smohalla, Somnam and The Conspirators of the Occult.

Finally in April I had a roster of bands that represented the label well. I found Pet Slimmers of the Year because they were signed to Lost Children Netlabel, which I respect quite a bit. Omega Centauri was suggested to me by Vicent Cassar (Slo) of Smohalla, and were from UK. This was their very first song ever released. Smohalla itself came in because Camille didn’t have any Dreams of the Drowned material to give, and this was one of his other band. Parabstruse was itself getting talked about quite a bit, so I had heard of Garry Brents before. This was actually their last song ever recorded. Now Kailash I had known for a couple years then. I somehow stumbled on Trazeroeuno Records in 2007 or 2008, and then checked them out when it was repressed by Paradigms Recordings. This is the only song from the album that is not exclusive. It appeared on their second full length, but this compilation came out first. The second full length was also to be released on vinyl by Abridged Pause, so it was all in the family. Feos and Semiosis I heard about from Silence is Also a Sound blogzine. And finally, Last Minute to Jaffna, Dying Sun and Tower were found by Myspace surfing.

so in the summer a temporary “under contribution” page replaced the website.

This time I asked Adam Kennedy to master the whole thing. He right away fell in love with the songs, so I knew I had something good. Adam actually did more than just master the whole compilation. He also chose the track order. To me that’s half of the work done. The whole works was ready by June, but I was then plagued with more delays. The website still wasn’t finished, when though Jeremy had started it back in 2008. I had to constantly run after him to work on it, and of course, I eventually gave up on waiting for him to finish it and released the compilation through Myspace. The website only went live in March of 2010, in time for the second batch of Abridged Pause Recordings releases (APR3 and APR4). 25 months in the making.

The second issue was that the artwork wasn’t getting done. In total four people worked on different ideas. I had originally asked Ham-Rah Edwards, who had designed Parabstruse’s album artwork for “Old Sentimental”, to do the artwork for the compilation. “Old Sentimental” was getting a good amount of recognition and I thought that Ham’s art was refreshing in the post-rock scene. He started working on it in early 2009 and first sent me a rough sketch of an idea he had with stalactites and stalagmites, with some sort of psychedelic bubbles or stars floating through the air. A few months later, he sent me a partly colored in version. But Ham was a junkie who vanished for vast periods of time, only to resurface and have no idea of how long he was gone. By the time that the summer came about, and I made him realize that I needed the artwork done in a brief period of time, he quit the project and vanished again on another drug trip.

I guess that I must have been talking to Niels Geybels from Depraved Designs during this period and mentioned that I needed artwork done for the compilation, but I honestly do not remember ever seeing anything he worked on until years later when he posted them on his website. But had I seen the pictures he intended on using in 2009, I would have turned them down as well because they weren’t very good.

Jeremy then offered to create the artwork and submitted a quickly designed version in dark orange and black with a clock. He thought this reflected “Abridged Pause”, but I didn’t like it at all. He wanted to work on some other ideas but I was a little skeptical about his vision and style, which although he was a great website designer, I didn’t see his artwork working out as album covers.

  • 2009-06-16 Vincent Cassar sends in the artwork for Diluvian Temperals

Finally Vincent Cassar offered to do the artwork. He had some unused designs that he let me choose from and I picked the crab design. I asked him to make a few changes to it, like removing the blue curves on the sides and also tone down the religious aspect to it. I made a few of those changes but was limited since he no longer had the original artwork file and we had to work with a flattened image. In the end I wound up editing the image myself but looking back on it, I could have done a better job. Vincent also designed a Myspace background and a flyer to promote the compilation. But I didn’t like those as much and they looked too busy and crunched with an overdose of information and a background that was too white.

The original submission of the crab cover

At this time, the the name of the compilation was “Atmospheric Waves” or “Atmospheric Temperals”. But Vincent suggested changing it to “Diluvian Temperals” (he may have also come up with the word “Temperals”, but I don’t remember for sure), and I totally went for it! It sounded perfectly post-metal!

So I started working on a flyer design myself but I also thought it looked terrible. I just couldn’t get all thirteen band names to fit correctly and make them look nice. So I turned to Jeremy for help and he wound up coming up with a really amazing design, which also reflected the design of the still-unfinished website, using the same background and the Birth of a Hero font. It looked amazing!

Diluvian Temperals flyer designed by Jeremy Roux

But then Jeremy thought that the album’s artwork should include the Abridged Pause Recordings logo that he had designed, to make sure that everyone seeing it would know who released it. I told this to Vincent, who most likely was not very happy about adding something visually clashing to his design, since the logo was buried in there and with different colors. Looking back on it, I should have incorporated the record label’s name in the title, as opposed to forcing a logo that didn’t look right.

The release finally came out on August 24th of 2009, on the Abridged Pause Myspace, because the website wasn’t done. By the time the compilation had come out, Parabstruse had been broken up for 6 days.
