The first song I that wrote for this album was “Song for Kristy” in October 2007. It was in drop D, as all Vision Éternel songs were at the time. The second EP wasn’t even out yet and I had written this song. I was set to do an album about Kristina Zub and I recorded two more demos, which had taping in it; a style unfamiliar to Vision Éternel. But the emotions left so fast, I found myself back into the mood of the second EP which was struggling to get released. Throughout 2008, I had a lot of difficulty writing new material. I was so busy with work, it somehow slipped my priority. In fact I was starting to doubt the possibility of a third EP, but it was still early, and I felt I had until February 2009 to worry about this.
In October 2008 I started dating Léonie Gascon-Codebecq. New emotions of love came back and there was hope. The hope in Vision Éternel came with the announcement of a split with Ethereal Beauty that was planned for mid-2009. At the same time it was announced that there would be no third EP in the early months of 2009, but rather the compilation “An Anthology of Past Misfortunes”. All my efforts were put into the compilation for the next couple of months, until late December of 2008, when Léonie broke up with me. At this point, it was needed for me to start working on a third EP. I wanted to write six new songs, to have this EP exactly like the ones before. But I actually never wrote a single song over Léonie.
FB update: 2009-02-24 Kelly’s back in C (possibly for Abondance De Périls?)
In March and April of 2009, two back-to-back break ups happened with Carolyn Kingsland and Sonya Kertland. I was devastated, and I needed to create again! Carolyn was intended to be a full length, as Léonie was. For Carolyn I recorded two demos, “Thoughts as Resentment” and the “Extended” part of the EP. The extended part was influenced by the outro of Astral Luminous’s self-titled song on their 2009 album “Lunar Tide”. The melody was so beautiful and moving that it must have stayed within me and inevitably came out when I was writing.
Had this EP been for Carolyn, the tiles would of looked like this:
- Thoughts as Consolation
- Thoughts as Affection
- Thoughts as Resentment
- Thoughts as Obstacles
- Thoughts as Lessening (this title was chosen in 2017)
- Thoughts as Yearning
- Thoughts as Naïvety
In actuality, there was a total of seven songs written during this period. I had trouble finding a word for the song “Thoughts as L”. But the song would have ended up like “Thoughts as Solicitation”, because a lot of the other letters were re-used for Sonya. However in this case, the song in the place of “Solicitation” would have been called “Consolation”. After Sonya I started writing more material but I had tuned down Kelly to drop C.

What happened?
Was it just a typo?
Or perhaps the recording sessions started on May 18th, but the content on the EP itself only started November 18th?
Would need to be changed again because some overdubs and eBow was recorded as early as January 14th (Thoughts As Obstacles) and eBow overdubs for Thoughts As Affection were February 18th.
Summer kind of side-tracked by the first two EPs getting reissued on tape by Winterreich; by Diluvian Temperals and all the APR plans; and by finishing up Soufferance Travels LP and EP reissue. Also going to school.
By the summer of 2009 I had written and recorded “Thoughts as Naïvety” and “Thoughts as Affection” as well as a new re-recording of “Narcosis”. That summer I announced the album under its original working title “L’espérance d’une vie”, but I still had a few more songs to compose and record. “Thoughts as Yearning” was inspired by the previous EP’s b-side “Season in Seclusion”, though I don’t think I realized it at the time. To me it’s still in my top two favorite song from this EP.

By mid-January, the EP was fully recorded, now set to be titled “L’espoir d’une vie” (click link to download the unmastered first version of the EP). I sent it off to Adam Kennedy to master the album, as he had previously mastered the two releases on Abridged Pause Recordings, and this was planned to be released on the label. He came back to me a few weeks later with an album that sounded totally different from Vision Éternel. He had gone all out and did his special touch to everything, and I explained to him that I really didn’t like what he had done. We spoke of exactly what I wanted, and he suggested a few changes on my side. First of all “Thoughts as Yearning” was re-titled to “Thoughts as Years”. Second, he mentioned that “Thoughts as Affection” sounded too similar to “Neglection” and “Desperation”. I couldn’t agree with him more on that, so I added some eBow to it. This was actually the first time I ever recorded my new eBow. He once again mastered the album and this time it sounded great! It was the best sounding Vision Éternel material to date!
What came up was the thing I was dreading the most. It was time to find artwork for this release. In the past I had taken care of making every single Vision Éternel cover. There were a few times when I had asked for external help, but always turned down their suggestions or submissions. On January 18th 2010, I went outside to Jarry Park with my then roommate Marina Polak. I took various pictures of light posts, and frozen nature. It was fucking freezing that night and I think the picture definitely showed that. But I didn’t like the pictures I took. They weren’t emotional enough for what I wanted.
Out of the pictures I took, these are the ones I kept for consideration:
Marina was a photographer and she had suggested before that if I ever needed any artwork or photography, she’d be happy to help out. At the time I had recently watched Jean-Pierre Melville’s “Army of Shadows” for the first time and absolutely fell in love with the cinematography. It was such a gorgeous desaturated, rainy atmosphere. I showed Marina parts of the movie to give her an idea of what I was hoping to find. On January 25th, we set up to check out what older pictures she had, and the first one she showed me, I wanted it! I knew that picture would be perfect! She explained to me that she found the negative of this picture in a garbage while visiting Poland or Normandy, and that legally it was hers because no one else claimed it. She had touched it up slightly on Photoshop and all.

2009 January 25th 10:11 PM APR Twitter post “new Vision Éternel myspace totally redesigned!http://www.myspace.com/triskalyon”
2009 January 28th APR Twitter post “the more i listen to the new Vision Éternel ep, the more I think it’s their best one to date! coming soon on APR!!!”
Marina then suggested I change the album name. It really wasn’t very good, and I had taken in so many outside suggestions this time that I figured it would be okay. I came up with “Abondance de périls” and she liked it instantly. It fitted the artwork as well. This was the first time I only did a front cover for the album, as it was going to be released digitally. In the past I had done back and CD covers, as well as promotional flyers. But I simply didn’t have anything else to work from this time. It’s with this dilemma that something new happened. I knew I would need a new look for the Myspace page. So I decided to make something on Photoshop that resembled the back of an old photograph. All dirty and with water marks. The album wasn’t going to be released for another twenty days, so on February 20th I used the artwork for Myspace as the cover of a single release. This was the first time that I did something unorthodox in the Vision Éternel catalog. This was the Rehearsal November 30th 2009. It got the hype going a bit and made people aware that Vision Éternel had a new EP out after two years of silence.
I asked Adam Kennedy to master the album, since he had done such a great job with the first two Abridged Pause Recordings releases. I was also getting ready to release his band’s album through Abridged Pause at the same time. On February 19th Adam sent me the first mastered version, but I didn’t like a couple of things.
“thanks man! although i do have a couple of changes id like to ask you… if its all possible.
it seems that in the last song the added ebow sounds more faded on the one you did then on the original wave… did you fix it up that way? i kinda liked that it standed out. it made it that much more obviously different than the other song that sounded similar from the other album.
also, the third song Naivety kinda has a totally different sound than the original. the original one was smoother. more discreet. and this one is too “in your face” small room type of thing. its also considerably louder than the two first songs…
but i really like that fade into the song you did on Years. brilliant. but as a whole, the album seems to be mastered in a “small room” type of sound, while i was always going to the huge room, infinite decay type of sound on all the recordings. keep in mind that this is also the first material recorded in Drop C rather than the two previous albums that were in Drop D. so i was also opting for the slightly lower sound this time… is it possible that we could re-work on these? and if you have more questions deff come on msn and ill describe more in details what i want, if it wasnt clear enough… i hope youre not taking these suggestions in a bad way. this is the first time i let someone else than me touch Vision Éternel material, so youre learning about it as im trying to “teach” it to you haha.”
He sent me the second mastered version on February 22nd and that’s the one I went with. I had missed the February 14th deadline so I planned to have it out for March 14th.
but I chose March 9th because it was a Tuesday, the closest one to March 14th. At the time, I wanted Abridged Pause Recordings to come off as a professional record label and major record labels always released their albums on Tuesdays. In hindsight, it’s the only Vision Eternel release not to have come out on a 14th and I regret that deeply. It was a mistake on my part.
