A Deciphered Retrospect of Lanterns Awake

-Origin of the name (2008)

“Lantern’s Awake” was a title with which I came up some time in early 2008, while I lived in the Ville Marie district of Montreal, at 2108 Bleury Street. I had no idea how the title would be used; either as a song title or an album title. I also had no new material requiring a title, but I liked the way it sounded so it was kept for a later use.

On September 9th of 2008, I recorded a new song without any affinity to a specific band or project. The new song had three segments: an Asian-sounding intro (which was a sort of re-working of the intro from the unreleased Vision Lunar song “Lunar XIII”, which had been composed roughly a year prior), and two folk-style strumming parts with reverb.

At the time that I was recording this new song, I was under the impression that I was composing indie rock, something along the lines of Green Territory, Douglas Fir and Crosstide. I decided to name this new song “Lantern’s Awake“, finally using the title which I had noted earlier that year.

I spent the next few months debating if I had what it took to start a new indie rock band. Finally, on December 22nd of 2008, I came up with the album title that I would use if such a band would ever exist: “Nebraska Motion”. But this idea fizzled out in early 2009 and I gave up the idea to play indie rock. I still really liked the title “Lantern’s Awake” and planned to reuse it at a later time.

A little while later, perhaps around 2009, I realized that this new song sounded like a mix between Vision Éternel (the reverb and the general sound of the production) and Vision Solitude (the folk-like strumming). In the end, this song wound up being labeled a Vision Solitude song.

-Post-Metal and Doom (2010)

It was during the “dark Marina days” (which would also bring the Éphémère collaboration) that I started jamming with Mina tuned in AADGBE. I didn’t know anyone who used this tuning, but I was often experimenting tunings for Soufferance. During January 2010 I recorded some of the lengthy Soufferance pieces in that tuning such as “Alternating Perfections”. Soufferance didn’t use distortion, but when I started jamming with some, I found that I had a really cool sludgy/post-metal sound. That was still during the hype of the recently released post-metal compilation “Diluvian Temperals”, so I was listening to a lot of those bands. I came up with about three really cool riffs and started building up something atmospheric around them. In some ways this was a new way to express the atmospheric black metal that I had done with Vision Lunar. I really loved the direction that I was going in, and this was a perfect opportunity to use the name Lanterns Awake again (dropping the apostrophe, although the meaning of the phrase was cooler with it). But I also strongly considered using the name “Arctodus” if I ever expanded to a full band. It was trendy for post-metal bands to name themselves after large animals; “Pelican”, “Mastodon”, “Lone Wolf”, and also many artworks featured deer, elks, large prey birds, bears, lions, wolves, or pre-historic animals. “Arctodus” was an interesting animal which wasn’t taken so I almost went for it.

February 12, 2010. Posted on FB “jamming some new Lanterns Awake.. creativity phase is back?”

I was working on only two songs. One that was really atmospheric and another that was more brutal, I was going to have two long songs for an EP, the same way Last Minute to Jaffna did their first EP. By March I was already thinking of the artwork. My maternal grandmother’s father used to operate one of the largest leather company in North America from the early to mid 1900s. It was called Ernest Beaudoin, and they used to have specially made bags for purchases. I found one at my grandmas one day, and I was really impressed by the artwork. I wanted to trace back who created it and possibly use it for the artwork of this EP, which I found fitted perfectly. I started retracing the entire bag on Adobe Illustrator, leaving out the man in the middle. It was a very lengthy job and I put it on hold until a later time.

In late March 2010 I traded my Epiphone guitar for a B.C. Rich Mockingbird from my friend Charles “Charli” Andre Lemieux, because we both liked each other’s model better and wanted to use the bodies to rebuild our own guitars. But he had been dishonest with me. The trust rod was broken in his B.C. Rich and it was unplayable. There was fretbuz beyond belief and it sounded like shit. I tuned it in Drop A and after starting to jam something really doomy death metal on April 1st, I decided I would attempt to record a doom metal song demo every day, for as long as I could. I succeeded on April 2nd as well. Those were titled “Part One” and “Part Two”, in hopes of having more parts. I recorded those two songs on a 4-track that Darklink (Phil Altobelli) had given me in 2009. I wasn’t doing Projection Mina anymore, so I put those two songs in the Lanterns Awake folder. I contacted Garry Brents about doing some very lo-fi drum programming on them and to send it off to tape only underground labels, but he had no time for that.

this wasn’t a serious project, i was purposely trying to make things that sounded terrible, just to see if people would jump on it, because it was trendy. Garry was doing a ton of crap like that. labels like Svartgalgh and imprints were peddling shit like that to people left and right. I felt insulted that the music that I spent a long time perfecting was being ignored in favor of bedroom projects that recorded shitty drone metal, and they were getting attention and selling out their pressings. Marina’s boyfriend Paul listened to a ton of that crap. It was me wanting to do something anonymous just to see how far I could take something that really was bad music.

When I chose the name Lanterns Awake that’s when I created the Myspace page.

April 1, 2010 is when I created the Bandcamp page. Likely already had the Myspace page.

Appears that I also created email lanternsawake@gmail.com around the same time. It was probably necessary for Bandcamp.

hey dude! short time no speak… ive got this new studio project going. i guess its called “doom-core”, but let me describe it quickly. i improvise very sludgy doom metal songs with death metal type breakdowns at the endings, and record them on my 4-track player, and then transfer them to my computer. so its very low fi. im looking for a partner in this band to do drums or drum programming over this stuff, and send it off to small record labels in the genre that will do limited pressings. are you interested in collaborating?

hey alex! unfortunately you caught me at a bad time. I’m sort of without my own computer and I have a couple things I’m doing where I’m programming the drums already and it’s very seldom that I get to work on it as is. If/when I can get a new computer for myself, I’d like to help if you haven’t found help yet by that time! I’d like to hear some samples of it too, maybe I can squeeze in some drum programming if I get extra time. It sounds like a cool idea, too .

damn dude. everyone ive asked has backed out of it.. can you recommend anyone to me? anyone at all? ill take live or programmed drums… or let me know as soon as youve got some time towork on them. i write and record a lot of demos because its so easy to do. but here is the very first demo i recorded… the prod needs to be polished a bit, but generally i want it to sound lo-fi and bad. but just not “that” bad haha

I’ll give this a listen though, and see if I can help out

tnx dude! i hope you dig the music!

That wasn’t so much a serious plan of mine either, it was more of an experiment to see how far I could get this shitty music. I was disgusted by how many drone and dark ambient bedroom projects out there turned out a ridiculous amount of crap on a weekly basis. Some bands had upwards of 50 releases a year, on a ton of various record labels. It was a joke. I knew some of those people somewhat personally, from talking with them online, and some of the record labels as well, as they had worked with Soufferance. I wanted to see if I could come up with the most ridiculous sounding, metal-machine music type of material and throw it in the face of those record labels.

One of those was Cara Neir, which I couldn’t take seriously, very likely why I reached out to Garry in the first place.

By summer 2010, I had moved and was living on Henri-Bourassa and I was confident enough of the two post-metal songs to place an add on Craigslist, Kijiji and Afterdawn (a forum which I had been part of for a long time that had no relevance to music) to find other musicians. At this time, I was particularly influenced by Woburn House’s album “Monstrous Manoeuvres in the Mushroom Maze”. A guy from Ireland that was either visiting Montreal, or here on an extended vacation (trying to find a job under the table) responded to me with great interest. His name was Ivan Byrne and he played guitar. Back in Ireland he had played a couple of post-grunge bands, Outbreed, Feeding Time, Wishbone and Sundance Crow. He came over my apartment on July 16th to jam. I showed him the first song, which he loved, and then I showed him the second song which wasn’t done, and finally we started working on a third song right away on our first meeting. It was really promising and we had a really awesome dinner of poutines from Orange Julip that Laura had brought home. A couple days later he sent me a GuitarPro demo of the third song we had started working on, fully composed in his own view, called “Illuminatum”. I didn’t really like the other riffs he came up with, but I figured we would both have to make some compromise. However he shadily stopped responding to my emails after that day and never gave me news again… all the while he was active on Facebook, so I knew he wasn’t dead or gone back to Ireland. It took him a month to respond, by an email, saying that he was eager to jam again, only to disappear again. I was really depressed about Ivan ditching me, and no one else had responded to my adds, so naturally I felt like my music wasn’t good. The only thing that kept me going was that Laura liked it, and she used to joke about a certain moshing riff that was in the first song.

I also just had a falling out with Charli. So I decided to say “fuck Lanterns Awake”, and release the two doomy death metal 4-track demos under the EP “The Times and Betrayals of Charles Adrian Lemieure, in Two Parts” on August 22nd, 2010. I even used the artwork I had been working on for this, and it wasn’t finished so I just used the original scan and Photoshoped it. I was supposed to go to New Jersey with my uncle for a week to appear in a movie that Howard Change (Sabbat from Throne of Mortality) was filming that late August, and my uncle backed out and fucked me over. I was pissed and decided to just record two more doomy death metal 4-track demos and release another Lanterns Awake EP, as the band was going nowhere now. Laura even came over that weekend when it happened, and tried to cheer me up, but nothing worked. On September 4th 2010, “The Unforgivable Truth of a Broken Family, a Contemporary Piece in Two Parts” was released. The two 4-track-doomy-death-metal-eps were in fact very bad material, and I have since discontinued their distribution, but I continued to liked the album titles that I used. I wish that they would have been planned a bit better though.

February 3rd (recorded at his place)

Out of nowhere, some luck occurred on September 1st when Alex Luca got in touch with me through the AfterDawn forum post. He was a bassist, and he told me that he was very technical and played a custom 7 string bass. I was blown away, and he agreed to come over and jam later that week on September 3rd. He really liked the first song I had been working on, and said there was hardly anything to work on. However the second and third songs were pretty average.

That first jam we started fixing up the first song and adding ideas to the third. I was listening to Bathory a lot during that time, so the second song ended up having a great deal of similar riffs.

Alex and I jammed once more that week on September 8th. That night I recorded all three songs to see where we were at, and also because he said that he had a friend named Phil who played drums and would probably want to join us. So I sent him the three recordings and he showed Phil.

Phil suggested that we name ourselves “Gravity Well”, and Alex was interested in that whole space themed music. He also suggested that the first song be called “Entering of the Mind’s Sarcophagus”. I thought all that stuff was over done already and that title/name were bogus. I still wanted to just do a two song EP to start with, and the theme I wanted was something more complex and personal (I can’t recall the concept I had in mind), and I liked the names “Arctodus” or “Orque” (which is Orca in French), and still wanted to use the name Lanterns Awake more than anything. The only space theme that I was interested in was to cover the main “Dune” theme from the film, a soundtrack that has always been in my favourites. I wanted to do a cover of the main theme in an atmospheric post-metal version for the opener of our shows.

Alex and I jammed another time on September 12th, and then once again on September 16th, and by this time the first song was finished and we had deconstructed the second and third songs in order to put them back together as a single one, only keeping the good parts and composing new riffs to it. I recorded those two songs that night as well. His friend Phil had backed out of the plan by then because he didn’t own a drum set and some other bullshit reasons.

Maybe around mid-September 2010, Jeremy Roux tells his friends Guillaume Fleurent and another Jeremy about Abridged Pause Recordings.

On September 24th, 2010, Paulhus leaves a comment on Vision Eternel’s Last.fm page praising the music and offering to publish posts: “Excellent matériel, si jamais vous avez des news à faire diffuser. Passez par le www.pelecanus.net / Great stuff, if you want to share some news with the post-rock community, just ask www.pelecanus.net”

While Alex was busy with his main band, I found Guillaume Fleurent through Paulhus (https://www.last.fm/user/William_Paulhus) who knew of him and that he was looking for a band. I sent Guillaume an email on October 6th and he responded on the 7th. He lived really close to me in Ahuntsic, and I could walk to his apartment in ten minutes.

First jammed with Guillaume on October 9th. Recorded the two songs there that day. That afternoon I showed him the two songs we had, and I even recorded them at his home studio for him to practice to until we jammed again a week later. He seemed really dedicated, and he was an audio producer with a nice home studio, and had recorded a few noisecore and metalcore bands back in his hometown. Alex and I both thought it could be to our benefit to have him in the band.

On October 10th I had one of the last jams with Alex, and we were working on a brand new piece, but only had the first riff.

The second time I jammed with Guillaume was on October 14th. So one week later I went back to his place to jam the songs again. I was really disappointed to find out that he had not learned the songs and had trouble keeping up with me during jamming. It wasn’t that he was a bad guitar player, but for some reason he was unable to comprehend the slow-galloping picking that I was playing. So we amicably agreed that it wasn’t going to work out. On his side, Alex didn’t have time to jam for our band anymore.

[The Inarguable sent me the Vision Eternel interview on the night of October 13th/14th; I answered it right away ove-night, and it was published later that same day, the 14th. so I answered the questions, went to jam with Guillaume, then later that night the interview was published. That means that by this time, Paulhus had already blackballed me; since he was friends with Guillaume, maybe it had something to do with it.]

On our next jam, October 19th Alex and I attempted to record some guitar and bass demos. He brought along his external sound card and his laptop, but he had no idea how to get it running nor how to record anything at all with distortion. He was getting mad at the way the things sounded once recorded and he wanted to go for a Djent sound, something very compressed and over-produced. I liked Cloudkicker, but I wasn’t technical enough to pull that off. Finally, he gave up trying to record and said that it was my job to try to be a better guitar player, because otherwise our recordings would never work. He then said that I should continue writing on my own and just give him a call when I was ready for the bass parts, because he wanted to dedicate his time for his other band MirrorMind.

Alex was condescending, he was a snob, he acted like he knew everything. He wasn’t arrogant; he was just a fucking snob. Everything had to be overly technical and progressive and he would look down on my style of playing, my compositions, my recording methods. But I was the only one actually doing anything. He hadn’t ever even been in a studio or recorded any of his music before meeting me. he had no idea what he was talking about. I gave him a copy of the extremely limited edition Vision Lunar CD, and asked him to listen to it and see if he thought we could re-use any of the riffs in our new band. All he had to say was “I fell on my ass bored by it”. He also said that the Souffearnce CD bored him but that he gave it to his sister for her to listen to while studying.

I really enjoyed writing with Alex because I would come up with a shit load of riffs that I liked, and he would pick out the good ones and help me tweak them into something good, and we’d integrate it together in the songs. It was really the best song-writing pair I had ever had.

So I actually stopped working on Lanterns Awake altogether for two months. Once again, I thought it was all over. It didn’t help that William Paulhus had ruined a great promotional opportunity for my band Vision Eternel at around the same time and tried to blacklist Abridged Pause Recordings from local promoters.

In December 2010 I started Murder On Redpath, but at first we were only playing cover songs, so I wasn’t composing music; just having fun playing covers.

In January I had an idea. I was going to find myself a drummer and get Alex back in the band. I told him about the idea and he said if I could get a drummer, he’d be in. [guitar was recorded in December but I hadn’t been able to mix it, so on Jan 9th I reached out to Garry] So on January 9th I recorded as best I could a demo of the first song, but I couldn’t get it to sound good enough for anyone to get the proper impression of it. I asked Garry Brents if there was anything he could do because I needed desperate help. [He sent me back a zip with 4 files: Left Guitar, Right Guitar, Verb Guitar and a reference file of his own mix. I would have been able to mix it myself from those files, and I can’t remember if I did. I think that I may actually have, in fact I vaguely recall adding more reverb to the reverb file and then making my own mix out of that. But he had added good distortion on the left and right guitars].

hey garry. ive got a weird project to suggest to you. ive got this post-metal band, and ive recorded a demo of a song, but i cant seem to mix or produce or whatever that would be called, the guitar tracks together, or get a reasonable sound that i like for this particular recording. i know youve done some production work with other bands before, and was wondering if i could send over to you the tracks for you to try to mix/produce/whatever this would be called to get a good post-metal sound?

Hey man, yeah I’d definitely give it a try. Do you have the DI tracks of the guitars/bass? That would really help me, so I could reamp them with different amps for versatility.

Alex: 1/10/11, 10:32 AM Facebook
im not sure what you mean by DI track? is it a track for Guitar Rigg? I have recorded all the guitar tracks with Adobe Soundbooth. the bassist will record his stuff over my guitar tracks, but i just cant get this to work at all. this is a post-blackened sludge project type of thing, so i still want it dirty, but i dont want it sounding like Vision Lunar (my old project). id like this to have some kick in it…
so i have all the wav files, and im using Adobe Soundbooth. is there a specific file that i have to export for you to have all the wavs and diff tracks lined up properly and in each track when you open it in a program? i havent done this exchange before so i hope i dont sound like a fuckin noob haha
would this be an OMF file that you need?

Garry: 1/10/11, 11:40 PM Facebook
The DI’s are the guitar/bass files that are recorded direct in, clean, with no effects or amp emulation on them. I don’t know if you record your guitars direct-in or if you mic’d an amp (although, it is a good thing to do both if available). If I have the DI’s, I can process them with different amps as if you were here plugging your guitar into them, so to speak. If you didn’t record them DI, that’s okay. I can do my best to mix the guitars.
An OMF file isn’t supported by what I’m using, unfortunately. The workaround is by rendering all of your files to WAV starting from 0:00 (or whatever the beginning number mark is in your project file) up until the end of the song. Do this to every track and put them into a zip folder if possible. I know it’s a endearing process, but that is currently the only way.

Alex: 1/11/11, 11:03 AM Facebook
when i record with distortion, i usually do it with my pedal kus i cant get a sound i like with those amps. but i also dont like my pedal on sound because it sounds like awful black metal.
this is a post-blackened sludge project, and i like the BM influences in there but not necessarily the sound.
a few other tracks were done with reverb, also with pedal, but not enough and not even with a sound im enjoying, since it doesnt blend with the rest.
ive taken a screen shot of the song tracks in soundbooth so you can see what it looks like. the thing is that each of those are diff guitar parts over that time line, so im thinking that if i make each track its own long wav, ud have to cut it back up again to mix each individual parts. i hope you get what im saying.
otherwise i can do each separate track in a separate long file, but ud have like 11 tracks. let me know what you want me to do.

in this zip includes Guitar Left, Guitar Right, and Verb Guitar ready to insert in your project — as well as a reference mix file of the guitars, but that’s why I gave you the separate files in case you wanted to mess with the levels of the guitars yourself.
Also, let me know if this is the kind of sound you were looking for. Obviously the riffs will sound thicker and fuller whenever you have the bass mixed in, too.

Alex: 1/12/11, 11:30 AM Facebook
this sounds great dude! and you did this super fast! although my recording is sloppy, this sounds great!!!
there are a couple things though, perhaps you can fix. first, the right track features some of the reverb at the 3rd time around (2:15-2:50). i was wondering if you could put that on the reverb track as well, and just double the original guitar for that part. i think i will re-record the reverb tracks because they arent very good. or perhaps even leave them out til the end to see if they are really needed.
also, at 4:00 there is an odd blank space in the right track. looking at my files i sent you, it doesnt seem to come from my side.
but other than that, it sounds really great and full! did you use guitar rigg for this? ive tried using it but just cant get a sound that i like! maybe i need more messing around..
what did you think of the song itself?

thanks garry! its great! so far we only have two songs written, so would you be okay to fix up the second song when its finished? so far its only the bassist and i and if the other song sounds as good as this, well have something good to send to find a drummer and second guitarist. the other song is much more progressive than this one, so it gives a pretty good aspect of what the band wants to do.

Garry: 1/13/11, 2:19 PM Facebook
sweet! Yeah I’m interested in doing the second song as well. I hope you guys get to find other members soon! It sounds very promising.

Mix own mix of the song before Garry Brents did his magic

On January 12th he returned the song to me in full splendor and it sounded amazing! And it was right on time for my promotional idea. I added the song on Soundcloud, and on my birthday, January 15th, I sent messages to everyone on my Facebook that lived in Montreal, asking if they knew of any drummers and to show them my song or get me in contact with them. I did it on my birthday because Facebook doesn’t limit your activity on that day, knowing you will be in contact with a lot of people, so I was able to message hundreds of people. A few people gave me names of drummers, but nothing happened. I wasn’t able to set up a single meeting.

In a last hope I posted an add on Kijiji, again looking for members. This time a western Canadian responded to me, who was now living in Montreal. Patrick McDowall contacted me on January 23rd 2011 and on the 29th he came over my apartment to jam. He also really liked the music and was impressed with the sound that I was going for. He offered me to go over his place to demo the songs so we could do some drum programming over it and get an idea. He also had a home studio, and on February 3rd I went to his place to record the songs. After doing a few takes, and figuring out that the tempo was changing multiple times during the songs, we finally got to record both songs, with noted tempos. He said he would work on them and get back to me shortly. However a week later a whole lot of excuses came my way, including school exams, girlfriend problems, housing issues, and finally that my music wasn’t technical enough to his taste, yet that he wasn’t able to add a drum track to a song that changed tempo that often. That was the last straw, and I was sick of everyone always telling they loved what I was doing, only to back out at the last minute when they weren’t able to work with it. I couldn’t understand, and gave up completely.

the recording session with Pat were shit. he kept insisting on having the exact tempo for every part of the song, and I wasn’t used to that. he was an arrogant asshole. he was a total hipster. he wanted to play technical death metal because he thought it was trendy, then switched to black metal when that genre became more trendy with hipsters. he was also really into the overly compressed production. yet he couldn’t comprehend how my songs had different tempos from one section to the other. It wasn’t important to me and I didn’t even pay attention to tempo changes

Hey Alex,
I’ve been looking to get a post-rock band going for a while – not necessarily restricted to post rock, and not without it’s heavy side. I listen to bands like
Tool
Pelican
Russian Circles
God is an Astronaut
Agalloch
Anata
SunnO)))
Opeth
Pink Floyd
Earth
Gentle Giant
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
maudlin of the Well
Meshuggah
This Will Destroy You
Ozric Tentacles
Sigur Ros
as well as some classical, jazz, klezmer, psytrance… I like diversity.
Anyways, lists are always horrible ways to test compatibility. Whereabouts do you live? We could meet up and have a chat if you’re interested.
I should probably point out that I play guitar, by the way 😛
It’s warm, I have to dash, but do get back to me!
Later,
Ivan

Hey Alex,
Ulver are great! I shall be free tomorrow if you’d like to jam then – I have a small amp I can haul along on the metro, as well as my guitar. I’m currently without a phone though, which could make communication a little tricky, but if you’re free I could call by at a designated time. I was thinking afternoon, if that’s good for you. If so, pop me your address and a time, and I’ll mail you back ASAP!

The lowest I’ve ever actually tuned is F standard – on a baritone guitar – so that I could play along with some Meshuggah tracks. It’s CRUSHINGLY low, though you need a good amp to maintain clarity….mine wasn’t good enough, haha. If I had the baritone at the moment, I could bring it, but I do not.
Anyways, I shall tune down to AADGBE, and I shall talk to you soon!

Ivan: Jul 15, 2010, 2:39 PM Email
Hey dude,
Apologies for the delay, my cocking internet went AWOL for a few days, but I’ve got it back up and running now 🙂
I’m good to jam anyday, except this Sunday, so if you’re free tomorrow or Saturday, give me a time and I’ll swing by! Do you have a spare amplifier, by the way, or should I bring one with me?
Apologies again!
Ivan

hey dude, im free to jam today, and tomorrow. up to you. ive got a 2nd amp right here, but being a bass amp it has no distortion. so bring your own distortion pedal and reverb if you use one, as well as your guitar and cables.
my number is 514-296-7037.
just call me before you come, because this apartement is weird and the entrance door is always locked so you cant come in to buzz my number haha.
my address is 1310 henri bourassa east.

Awesome. Well I’m heading to see American: The Bill Hicks Story tonight, so that’s out, but I’ll give you a shout tomorrow. I have no phone of my own at the moment, so expect a call from a payphone! 😛

Me: Sat, Jul 17, 2010 at 3:16 PM Email
hey dude! ive been working on that song you composed.. ive got the additional riff incorporated, the one that was just too much for the first song i wrote. i made a change to chorus type thing you had which were bar codes 4 then 5. i made them 3 then 4, just so they would be the same notes as the riff. it takes a bit to get used to but in teh end you dont really notice that big of a change… ill show you when we jam, and i may have more ideas thrown in there too.
find ideas on your end as well, so that we can compare our versions when we jam, and we can mix and match them.

Ivan: Jul 19, 2010, 1:26 PM Email
Hey hey,
I too was working on the song! I have a few other riffs that I like, though overall it could be more atmospheric, so perhaps we can come up with a few new parts. I made a guitar pro file of the riffs I have so far; you can listen and see what you think. It does need something more….I’ll also try changing the chords to 3 and 4, though I like the change from the 1 to the 4.
How went your weekend anyways? I shall be round during the week to hang out and jam – and hopefully I’ll have more ideas too by then 😛
Anyways, I’ve attached a .gp file and a .midi file, you should be able to listen to one of them and see what you think of the riffs. I tried to put drums to them….kind of worked, haha.
P.S. Illuminatum isn’t actually an idea for a name; I had no idea what to call it, and the Illuminatus! Trilogy is at the end of my row of books….. 😛

Ivan: Aug 3, 2010, 4:32 PM Email
Hey dude,
Sorry I haven’t been in touch; I have a friend of mine visiting from Greece, so I’m a little tied up at the moment! I’m around if you want to hang out some day, but I’ll have to wait till next week for jamming. Also, someone in my neighbourhood is cooking something which smells DELICIOUSLY Chinesey.

haha dude. did you venture out to find what that food was?
btw, my album was released! youre gonna love it!
and ya next week we really have to jam! ive got a lot of ideas and we bounce them off in a great way. im sure well have 4 songs by the end of our next jam!

Ivan: Aug 7, 2010, 4:23 PM Email
We damn well better 😛
And that’s awesome; I must see, touch and hear the final product! You’re free every day next week?

Bassist for post-metal band
Hey Alex!
I was actually replying concerning the post-metal band.
Are you part of the band in question, or part of the label?
One way or another, I’m quite curious as to how this band sounds.
-Alex

Me: Wed, 1 Sep 2010 22:13:57 Email
hey alex! what a great name haha
im one of teh 2 guitarists in the post-metal band. i have been writing stuff for it for a while, and recently was joined by a great other guitarist, with whom we are ellaborating my songs and creating new ones. we play in standard tunning with just the low E tuned down to A. so AADGBe. its a realllly fun tunning and it sounds badass!
this is a new band, so we dont have a drummer yet, but adding a bassist would be a great way to get things up a level. what part of montreal do you live in? i live in ahuntsic (metro henri-bourassa) and the other guitarist lives downtown. we usually jam at my place, since i have concrete foundations and never get a complain from the neighbors!

Salut!

Me: Sat, 11 Sep 2010 00:50:21 Email

Me: Sat, 11 Sep 2010 01:03:32 Email

Luca: Sep 11, 2010, 1:12 AM Email

Me: Sat, 11 Sep 2010 01:13:10 Email
je le trouve bof en maudit haha.

Luca: Sep 11, 2010, 1:17 AM Email
Fair Enough ^^

Me: Wed, 22 Sep 2010 11:46:55 Email

Me: Tue, 5 Oct 2010 20:04:33 Email

Me: Fri, 8 Oct 2010 13:01:46 Email
alex

Luca: Fri, Oct 8, 2010, 2:32 PM Email

Me: Fri, 8 Oct 2010 14:34:18 Email

Me: Fri, 8 Oct 2010 17:45:52 Email

Me: Sat, 9 Oct 2010 23:42:46 Email
esquon jam tjrs possiblement (a 2) demain?

Luca: Oct 9, 2010, 11:46 PM Email
Fuck ouais. ^^

Luca: Thu, Oct 14, 2010, 1:27 AM Email
The secret is in the 7 strings ;p

Me: Thu, 14 Oct 2010 01:28:38 Email
dude je suis fucking down too. quesquon fait avec les 2 progs? on les record et garde ca comme first demo? ou bien on les evolue a quelque chose dautre?

Luca: Thu, Oct 14, 2010, 1:35 AM Email

Me: Thu, 14 Oct 2010 01:41:54 Email

Hey, ça va me faire plaisir.

Et, last but not least, j’ai un show le 29 janvier à 20h au café chaos!
Bref, bonne année, et keep them coming.

Me: Sun, 10 Oct 2010 07:39:03 Email

Hey Alex. I enjoy how you have created something that is both black and
sludgy. Very nice. Hard to find metal song writing like this. My current
guitar is not setup to tune this low, but that could be remedied easily.
What tuning are you using?
Do you know where you want to go with this project? Any other members
already involved? Do you have jam space? I also play keyboard/synth and
I have been a singer/screamer for a metal band a few years ago. So,
there are a few different things I could do, if needed.
I guess just send me any more info you have or anything else you would
like to mention.
Patrick

Me: 11-01-24 3:16 PM Email
hey pat. glad you liked it! the band was me and this bassist for a while. he really helped me put the pieces together, although all the composition was me. but he had a really progressive approach to music and it was amazing working with him. he was a 7 string fretless bassist. he quit just a couple weeks ago, right when i found a few potential drummers, as he was too busy with his other band.
We jammed at my place because i have concrete foundations, so everything but drums is highly tolerated. well have to find a jam space if one of those drummers comes in.
as far as the music itself goes, I always intended it to be mostly instrumental. I feel that between the members of the band, if vocals are needed in specific areas, we can handle them ourselves. and I do think that some keys would be benefited in production stage.
the tunning is a little secret, which i will tell you if we are certain to jam 😉
what area to do you live in and whats your schedule like?

Hey Dude. I should be able to get back to you about very soon
(hopefully, tonight) about when we can meet to record your riffs. I am
excited to layer and arrange some parts for the songs. I am sure that
Feb 2, 3, or 4 will work. I just need to find which day works best with
this weeks schedule.
In the meantime… you had asked if I knew of a program that has a click
you can play along to. I found this web based one that should work for you:
http://www.flutetunes.com/metronome/
For the song that you sent me I think you would want to set the Beats
Per Measure to 3, because the song is in 3/4 timing. You can click the
“Tap Tempo Here” button to the beat of the song to find the right tempo
to work with. Hope that helps!
BTW, I still don’t have a cell phone.
Also, I checked out your dark ambient record. Cool atmosphere and
concept. Like I said, the packaging is really cool.

Yes, it is cool if you stay until 9 or 10 or whatever, no worries at all. All you need to bring is your guitar. Would you be able to come over around 7? I think 2 hours should be enough time to get those tracks recorded.
I was thinking that I could meet you at the Second Cup coffee place on the corner of Claremont and Sherbrooke. I’ll show you to my place from there because it can be hard to find. It is about thirty seconds away from the coffee shop.

Hey Alex,
Really sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Lately, my life has
become a little crazy. I have had to find a new apartment and sublease
my current place. A little trouble with my girlfriend. I am also
reaching midterms and final assignments and studying for mid-terms is
becoming intense.
I have given it some thought and I think I would rather play in a
project that is more technical. That and my life is crazy right now. I
need to focus so I can get through this term in school without losing my
mind. It was cool jamming and I wish you luck in finding a guitarist
that is a good fit for your project.
Good luck,

Hey Pat. Have you gotten my last email? If not, i was wondering if you could send me the two songs we recorded? I could really benefit from
those better recordings so i could add drums to them and try to find a band again.
thanks
alex

McDowall: Feb 22, 2011, 9:48 AM Email
how do you want me to send the tracks to you? What format? All in one
audio file? Let me know what you would like. I don’t know how you would
be able to make drums for the tracks because the tempo changes often.
(remember when we were changing the BPM after each section?). Also, the
tracks themselves are off rhythm a lot (sorry, just being honest) so the
drum parts I was making would not line up with your rhythm, so I kind of
gave up.
That being said, my suggestion would be that compress the entire Reaper
project and sent it to you through Mediafire.com. Then you can download
reaper and use the files within reaper. That way you have a timeline
that matches all the tempo changes we programmed when recording the riffs.
Let me know

Hey dude, back in December 2010 you mixed this post-metal song that I had recorded. https://soundcloud.com/abridgedpause/post-blackened-sludge-metal-1
I had actually recorded a second song but thought I lost it. I just found it and I was wondering if it would be possible for you to do the same thing with it? It’s only 1 clean guitar track. It would be to add distortion and make it match that first song. Is this something you could do?

Sick dude!
Sounds fucking neat ! Very black-metal on the riffs construction… My concern here is that I’m not a huge huge double bass player and I don’t know what do you expect in terms of drumming on your track…
Still I like the musicality of the tune, plus the overall construction and if you are down to low a little bit these kind of rhythm to something a little bit slower, louder and deeper, that would be exactly my dope.
Do you know Year of no Light ? and Amenra? They have the vibe I’m kinda seeking for.
Check my older stuff I was in (back in Europe)

You’d be up to Jam soon, so we can give a try and see how it goes mixing our ideas?
Cheers !

Ya we can try something out. I listen to a lot of 90s metalcore so I think we can connect on a lot of stuff. Do you have a place where we can jam? Unfortunately I don’t have room for drums in my apartment.

Duff: Dec 3, 2013, 3:46 PM Email
Yup I’ve got a space for my drum (behing Bell center … sketchy but cool) and we can do a kick-ass jam nearly all days 😀
Do you have any free evening this week or next week?
See ya

Hey dude! Sorry about taking so long! With Xmas and New Years I’ve been super busy. And I had to finish some renovations in my apartment. What are your availabilities after Xmas? We can plan out an afternoon to jam and then if you have time for a drink at my place after, since we live close by?

Duff: Dec 25, 2013, 8:35 PM Email

Hey Duff! So sorry about the huge delay and all that. I have to admit that after the holidays, I had a bit of a mood crash. I think I’m okay now! Are you free to jam tomorrow (Sunday, January 19th 2014)? If not we can plan a 100% date this week to get this going again!
You can text or call me if you prefer! 514-318-1621.

Keep me posted on the jamming. I’m still interested! I have a friend who might be interested in playing second guitar, once we get good with the songs.

Hi Dude !
Sorry I’ve been pretty busy lately in between my job and my home moving… I’m gonna try to free up some time in March, so we can make noise again.
Hope u ok?
Speak to u soon!

On December 21st 2019, I decided on the official naming of the songs. Lanterns Awake Part 1, Lanterns Awake Part 2, Lanterns Awake Part 3. This was mainly based on the fact that all of the demoed songs had numbers on them, and also because the March 26th 2010 recordings were titled “Late March 2010 Version of Lantern’s Awake”.
